What is sustainable food?

Defining sustainable food is anything but simple. Many terms such as organic, sustainable, local, and healthy are tossed around to address sustainability in a holistic and locavorious manner. However, for the sake of brevity, the definition will be limited to a paragraph.
According to the Sustainable Food Laboratory, the sustainable food system is one in which the fertility of our soil is maintained and improved; the availability and quality of water are protected and enhanced; our biodiversity is protected; farmers, farm workers, and all other actors in value chains have livable incomes; the food we eat is affordable and promotes our health; sustainable businesses can thrive; and the flow of energy and the discharge of waste, including greenhouse gas emissions, are within the capacity of the earth to absorb forever.
Whoa! Perhaps it should be coined "miracle" food instead of "sustainable" food. I am only joking!
No one solution or way of addressing sustainable food is going to fix the many-faceted mess (i.e. economic degradation, climate change, soil erosion, water pollution/mismanagement, etc.) this world is experiencing. The best approach is to apply the various notions and hope they work in consortium. It is possible that we may need a whole new paradigm to encompass the food system scale.
SEEDlings approach is to utilize all the tools of knowledge at our disposal and do as much as we can to educate the public to eat healthier; think globally, act locally; and reduce the amount of waste produced at all levels of the food system product life-cycle.
